New cases of swine flu have almost doubled, with 53,000 new infections in the past week, up from 27,000 the week before. The jump is the largest since the initial summer outbreak, indicating the second surge of the virus is well under way.

Hospitalization rates have also risen, with 506 people in England needing care, including 99 people receiving critical care - the highest number so far. The UK has also seen a further 16 deaths from swine flu, bringing the total to 122.

The figures came as the national swine flu vaccination programme started. NHS hospitals have begun giving the first doses of swine flu vaccine to their most vulnerable patients. Front-line healthcare staff are also being vaccinated.
GPs will receive supplies of the vaccine from Monday 26 October, which they will offer to patients facing the greatest risk of complications.
